My Period is Late. What Do I Do?

If the date for your expected period came and went, you’re likely feeling some anxiety. You may even wonder if you’re pregnant.

It’s crucial to remember that a missed period can have other causes besides pregnancy. Weight changes, hormonal balances, and medical conditions can cause irregular cycles. Even stress can impact your menstrual cycle.

However, if you are sexually active (even if you had sexual intercourse weeks ago), you should take a pregnancy test. That way, you’ll receive an initial answer and decide your next steps.

Continue reading to learn more about taking that next step. You can also schedule an appointment at Path for a free urine pregnancy test.

Take a Deep Breath

It’s easy to jump to conclusions when your period is late. However, it’s important to take a deep breath. You aren’t alone; if you are pregnant, support is available to help you make a decision.

Think about whether you have had any early pregnancy symptoms like nausea or fatigue. These symptoms could indicate a pregnancy.

If you have had sexual intercourse or pregnancy symptoms, it’s crucial to take a pregnancy test.

Test for Pregnancy

Today, various home pregnancy tests are available in pharmacies and grocery stores. If taken correctly, they are highly accurate.

All pregnancy testing works by detecting hCG levels in your blood or urine. This pregnancy hormone rises rapidly during the initial weeks of pregnancy.

However, it’s essential to wait at least a week after your missed period or several weeks after sexual intercourse. That way, you give any hCG time to build to detectable levels.

If you take the test too early or incorrectly, you may receive a false-negative result. If you receive a negative result but still suspect a pregnancy, wait a few days and then test again.

Be sure to test first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated, and follow the directions carefully.

What if I Get a Positive Result?

Even if you receive a positive pregnancy test, you still need to medically confirm your pregnancy. Path will offer a no-cost ultrasound if you receive a positive result at our center.

A Licensed Sonographer or Registered Nurse/Midwife trained in ultrasound will perform the scan. The ultrasound will determine whether your pregnancy is progressing, where it is located, and how far along you are.

Once you have confirmed your pregnancy, know that support is available. During a pregnancy consultation, we’ll discuss your options so you can make an educated decision. All services are provided in a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment.

What if I’m Not Pregnant?

If you are not pregnant but your cycle has yet to arrive, it is crucial to speak with a healthcare provider. They can discuss your specific situation and determine whether further testing is needed.

By being proactive, you are prioritizing your health and well-being.
